    Origin: 1650-60 C.E.; regional dialetical variant of thwat or thwot, meaning a cut or forest clearing, from Old English thwat; also related to N England dialectical thwaite meaning forest clearing; similar to Old Norse thveit which means cut, slit, or forest clearing.

    Robert Browning accidently included the word twat in his 1841 poem ‘Pippa Passes’ mistakenly thinking it meant hat.

    Robert Browning found the word in the 1660 poem ‘Vanity of Vanities’.
