Origin: The word first appears in English writing in 1825 C.E., but not in common use until 1852, originally introduced into English as a euphemism for scandalous undergarments of linen; from French lingerie meaning things made of linen (also laundry room or linen shop) 15th century, from Middle French linge meaning linen, from Old French linge meaning linen 12th century, from Latin adjective lineus meaning made of linen, from Latin linum meaning flax.
